What format does StepDocs export?
A native Microsoft Word (.docx) file — fully editable in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice. Each step gets its own row with a screenshot on the right and the activity description on the left, in landscape format.
Can I document desktop applications, not just web apps?
Yes. StepDocs uses your browser's Screen Share API to capture any screen, window, or tab — including native desktop apps like SAP GUI, Excel, Outlook, or any internal enterprise software.
What browser do I need?
StepDocs requires Google Chrome version 116 or later. The floating capture panel uses Chrome's Document Picture-in-Picture API which is exclusive to Chrome. All other features work in Edge too.
Is StepDocs a free alternative to Scribe?
Yes. StepDocs is a free, privacy-first alternative to Scribe and Tango. Unlike those tools, nothing is stored in the cloud, no account is needed, and the Word export is free — not locked behind a paid plan.
Can I edit steps before exporting?
Yes. After capturing, you enter a full Review screen where you can edit activity descriptions, reorder steps by dragging, delete any step, and zoom into screenshots before you export.
